05-09-2013 National eye donation fortnight celebrated
Institute of Ophthalmology of JNMC is observing National Eye Donation fortnight.
ALIGARH September 4: The Eye Bank of Institute of Ophthalmology, Jawahar Lal Nehru Medical College, Aligarh Muslim University is observing National Eye Donation fortnight which will conclude on September 8, 2013. Prof. Humayun Ashraf, Director of the Institute, said that he is trying to increase instrumental and mobile facilities at the Eye Bank. He said that Cornea specialty will also be started at the Institute soon. Prof. Ashraf said that AMU Eye Bank is one of the recognized Bank in India which is providing Cornea transplantation facilities. Dr. Adeeb Alam Khan, Office Incharge and Coordinator of Eye Bank, said that the eye bank was started in January 2006 and since then 45 eyes keratoplasty have been conducted. He said 1147 people have taken eye donation pledge and 753 people are in waiting for registration for corneal transplantation. Dr. Adeeb Alam said that anyone who is in the age group of 1 to 75 years, can donate eyes. People above 75 years of age can also make donations for medical education and research purposes. He said that it was a high time to make eye donation and people should step forward in large numbers to make eye donations.
